Nizzolo stage five victory opens account for NTT Pro Cycling in strong opening week of 2020 season.
The Santos Tour Down Under drew to a close in a thrilling finale on Wullunga Hill on Sunday which saw a desperate breakaway group, including Dylan Sunderland, reeled in by pre-stage favourite Richie Porte who claimed overall race victory.
Sunderland’s group consisted of 26 riders which was gradually whittled down with the Australian, on WorldTour debut, among the last to be hoovered up on the famous climb.
He eventually finished 12th, a hugely impressive result, to cap off a very good opening week for NTT Pro Cycling of the season.
The undoubted highlight of the week was a stunning win for sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo on the stage five finish at Victor Harbor.
The Italian’s win was the result of a meticulously laid out plan that saw impressive teamwork protect him on the sharp climb 20km to the finish, and brought to the front in the closing stages perfectly.
Nizzolo finished it off in style as the team wildly celebrated what will hopefully be a first win of many in 2020.
The race saw Bjarne Riis and Lars Michaelsen also at their first races as part of NTT Pro Cycling, and a week in which the themes of teamwork and communication were driven home.
