Mohd Harrif Saleh (TSG Cycling Team) just edged Max Walscheid on the line, to take the stage 5 win of the Tour de Langkawi. Matteo Pelucchi (Bardiani-CSF) rounded out the stage podium.
Stage 5 of the Tour de Langkawi was a flat 165km stage that always looked to be one for the sprinters. A fast start saw the break take some time to become established but eventually 6 riders got away.
NTT Pro Cycling did not want to give the leaders to much of a gap and so we started riding from around 80km out. With no help coming from the other teams, we kept the gap in check but eventually, we had to pull our boys from the chase.
Thankfully our work was enough to ensure the riders remaining up front were completely drained and the peloton brought them back with 7km to go.
NTT Pro Cycling then set up Walscheid for the sprint, with the team doing an excellent job once again. Michael Carbel was the last rider in front of our German, swinging off with 200m to go. Walscheid put down a brilliant sprint but incredibly, Saleh somehow came around the outside with a real turn of speed and just edged Walscheid on the line.
It was a disappointing 2nd place for Walscheid, having come so close to victory, but no doubt one that will spur him on in the stages to come.
