Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the stage 2 individual time trial of the UAE Tour. Team Qhubeka ASSOS had Max Walscheid finish in an impressive 7th place on the stage.
Stage 2 of the UAE Tour saw riders take on a flat and fast 13km time trial course on Al Hudayriat Island. The open and exposed course meant the main factor for riders to deal with today, would be the wind.
As one of the earlier starters, Walscheid set a solid time of 14’28” and was provisionally in 4th place. With still the majority of the field to go though, it was quite a wait to see how our German’s time would hold up.
Domenico Pozzovivo, our Team Qhubeka ASSOS GC hope for the UAE Tour also posted a respectable time of 14’48”, which would end up being good enough for 23rd on the stage.
As for Walscheid, only 3 other riders were able to better his time, including the World Champion, Ganna, which meant Walscheid ended in a very good 7th on the stage.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 will be the first of two summit finish stages at this year’s UAE Tour, with riders taking on the 10.6km Jebel Hafeet climb that comes at the end of an otherwise flat 166km stage.
