Vuelta Espana #15: O’Connor risks all in break, finishes 6th

Sepp Kuss (Team Jumbo-Visma) climbed to the stage 15 Vuelta a Espana victory, coming in ahead of Ruben Guerreiro (Katusha) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Team Ineos).

Stage 15 of the Vuelta a Espana was a massive climbing day in the Asturias region with the four category 1 climbs spread over the 150km route. After an attacking start to the stage, 17 riders rode off of the front of the race.

We had Ben O’Connor make it into the group of 17, being one of the final two riders to bridge across to the front group. The peloton kept them on a short leash for most of the day though, which then prompted attacks on the penultimate climb of the race in the break.

O’Connor went clear with two others over the top of the climb, with the chasers at roughly 1’30” behind. Unfortunately for our Australian, the chase group benefited from a very strong Vasil Kiryienka (Team Ineos) pulling on the flat valley road, and he brought the front of the race back together before the final climb.

Sepp Kuss then took his chance to ride away from the group on the final climb, and took a good stage victory. O’Connor burnt a good few matches in his earlier escape efforts but still fought to the line and finished the day off in 6th place.

All our other Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders got through the stage in good shape, as we head into another big climbing day to tomorrow.
