Ion Izagirre (Astana) won stage 6 of the Vuelta a Espana, taking the victory from the early break that included Michael Valgren, who went on to finish 5th on the stage for NTT Pro Cycling.
It was an extremely cold and wet stage 6 of the Vuelta a Espana. Another fast start saw a large breakaway group going clear once again, and Valgren made sure to get across to the move before cleared off from the peloton.
The rain and cold made the 146km stage to Formigal that much more difficult but it was conditions that our Danish talent thrived in. And even though the final 5km climb did not neccasarily suit the Valgren’s rider characteristics, he fought valiantly against the smaller climbers to finish 5th on the stage.
Behind the lead group though, the GC battle also went ahead and our young Gino Mader did well to recover from an untimely puncture in the last 10km to finish 23rd on the stage and moved up a spot on the overall GC to 17th.
