Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) won the opening 7km individual time trial stage of the Vuelta a Espana in Burgos, Spain. Alex Aranburu (Astana) finished 2nd and Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-Victorious) was 3rd.
Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Espana had riders take on a short 7km ITT around Burgos. Despite an early evening start, the tempreture was still north of 30 degrees centigrade when the first riders rolled off the ramp.
Team Qhubeka NextHash did not have a specialist targeting stage honours today but it was still important for the likes of Sergio Henao and Fabio Aru to get off to fast start. Aru was our 2nd rider off today, and he completed the course in a solid time of 9’09”.
Henao was our final rider to set off, just after 20:00 in the evening, and he went on to stop the clock in 9’01”. Roglic, the Olympic time trial champion, was pretty much in a class of his own as he took the stage win by 6 seconds with a time of 8’32”.
Our 6 other Team Qhubeka NextHash riders got through todays stage unscathed and are now focused on tomorrow’s stage 2, where Reinardt Janse van Rensburg will hope to have his chance at sprinting for the stage win.
