Mikel Iturria (Euskadi Basque Country) won stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana, beating his breakaway counterparts, Jonathan Lastra (Caja-Rural) and Lawson Craddock (EF-Education First) into 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana was another perfect day for the break, and so Team Dimension Data made it a priority to be in the move. 14 riders went clear in the early stages and we had both Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Ben O’Connor represented up front.
With around 50km to go, O’Connor came into difficulty and lost contact at the front, as the attacks started in the break with the peloton well over 10-minutes behind. Our Eritrean climber was on top of things, covering and countering all the accelerations that he could.
Iturria manged to get away solo in the closing kilometers. Ghebreigzabhier came within seconds of the Basque team rider with a kilometer to go, before Lastra, Cradock and co. caught our Eritrean. In the end, he had to settle for 6th place at the line with O’Connor coming home in 13th.
