A stunning final surge in the dying metres of the final stage saw Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier claim an impressive 3rd place at Lagunas des Neilas.
He finished behind stage and overall race winner Ivan Sosa (Ineos) who had reeled in Rui Costa (UAE) in the closing kilometre and win alone.
Ghebreigzabhier, who had juggled the final kilometres with the splitting group before launching late to finish ahead of Richard Carapaz and Guillame Martin, was 14 seconds adrift of Sosa. The result saw him climb two spots in the general classification to 6th overall.
Louis Meintjes was 12th on the stage, a minute behind his teammate, and finished in 22nd on the GC, showing rising form ahead of his next challenge to come.
That concludes a very strong week for the team that kicked off with a stage win for Giacomo Nizzolo that saw him wear the race leader’s jersey for two days.
“It was a nice race for the team. We came in with the plan to try and win a stage with Giacomo Nizzolo – which saw us do exactly that. We took the jersey immediately, then had a second place, an eighth and then having Amanuel finishing today in third. In addition we also had Louis getting better and closer to those GC guys.
“For me it was a really good week, the expectations (coming in) were a little lower than what we ended up achieving so a really good week. Especially from a team perspective, to see the guys riding all together – to defend the jersey, riding to win the sprinter stages – overall a really good week for the whole team.” – Bingen Fernandez
