Merhawi Kudus produced another strong finish, thanks to excellent teamwork, to finish 5th on stage four of the Vuelta a Burgos, behind stage-winner Carlos Barbero (Movistar).
Marco Tizza (Nippo-Fantini) was second and Nicola Bagioli (Nippo-Fantini) was third. While Kudus’performance sees him retain his third place in the GC competition.
Today was another good day for our team with Johann van Zyl positinioning Kudus with 2km to go and Amanuel Gebreighzhbier took up the baton to deliver him to the 1km mark.
A crash within 2km of the finish saw a number of riders held up and out of contention but Kudus stayed out of the trouble which allowed him to fight in the uphill sprint finish.
The GC positions remain unchanged: Kudus 3rd, Anton 5th & Meintjes 9th while Team Dimension Data remain top of team competition.
Merhawi Kudus – Rider
Last year we did the same finish, especially the last 5km, so we expected to achieve a better result. I was 5th then and now finished in the same position this year. The last 3km was a little bit hectic for us, everyone seemed fresh, the right time for me was with 400m to go I was with one other rider and up against the barrier on the other side. It (today) was good actually, I wanted a little bit more but it was a great team effort.
