A strong finish from Giacomo Nizzolo saw him follow his opening stage win of the Vuelta a Burgos with an impressive second place on day two of the race.
On the sharp climb to the finish, the Italian crossed 2 seconds adrift of stage winner Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural) and did enough to maintain his lead over the race overall. Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos) was third.
That result sees Nizzolo also retain the lead of the Points classification as well as the King of the Mountains.
“The stage went 100% as we planned it today. The four guys got away which was good for us as we didn’t want any more, in order for us to control the race. We did that as I started riding basically right away and I did most of the riding myself because it was better to save the rest of the team so that they can support Nizzolo in the final.
“I really surprised myself today and really enjoyed it actually, so it was really nice to feel normal again like I did in the past. I’m really happy with myself. A second for Nizzolo again today so that’s really good, winning yesterday, second today and another chance for him on Friday.
“Tomorrow is a big climbing finish and we hope to see Amanuel and Louis up there. The spirit is high in the race and we’re enjoying ourselves, that’s the most important thing.” – Jacques Janse van Rensburg
