Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) took a solo stage victory on stage 1 of the Volta Catalunya. Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) was 2nd and Grega Bole (Bahrain-Merida) placed 3rd.
Initially part of a 6-rider breakaway, in typical fashion, De Gendt went solo with just over 50km remaining of the 162km stage and managed to stay away all the way to the line in Calella.
The main peloton came charging into town some 2-minutes down on the Belgian. Our African Team had it hopes placed on Ryan Gibbons for the bunch sprint, but unfortunately with 2.5km to go, another rider rode into Gibbons, totally destroying his front wheel.
“It was a pity not to be able to contest the bunch sprint today. It was only going to be for 2nd but it still would have been nice to have an early hit out and maybe pick up the white jersey. If I had to have a bit of bad luck this week, then I guess I’m glad it was today, and is now out of the way.” – Ryan Gibbons
All our other Team Dimension Data riders got through the stage in good shape and we look forward to tomorrow’s undulating 166km stage.
