Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) won the uphill sprint on stage 2 of the Volta Catalunya. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) placed 2nd and Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) finished 3rd.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had Enrico Gasparotto mixing it up in the finale and secured a decent 8th place but the unfortunate news of the day was Gino Mader both crashed heavily, when trying to return to the peloton after a puncture.
Mader has a suspected broken wrist and is undergoing scans at the hospital. O’Connor was battered and bruised but could finish the stage, although he is out of GC contention now.
