Michael Matthews (Team Sumweb) sprinted to the stage 6 Volta Catalunya victory ahead of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Merida) and Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott).
The general consensus suggested Stage 6 of the Volta Catalunya was going to be another good day for the break to survive. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had other ideas, and were looking to Ryan Gibbons to get a result in a sprint finish.
When 5 riders went up the road, our African Team did a fantastic job to shoulder the chasing responsibility and controlled the escapees together with Bahrain-Merida.
Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Danilo Wyss and Ben O’Connor worked like troopers, protecting the interests of our South African sprinter.
As we managed to ensure the stage ended in a mass sprint, it wasn’t the fairy-tale ending we hoped for as Gibbons came home in 7th place.
“To be honest I feel pretty bad after how well the guys rode for me today, I really wanted to get more out of today’s stage for them. They were all incredible. We’ve had a bit of an unfortunate week in some aspects but our 4 remaining guys committed to me 100%, and rode out of their skin. So i’m pretty disappointed in that regard but really proud of the guys for making a race of it today.” – Ryan Gibbons after stage 6.
