Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) won stage 5 of the Volta Catalunya, surviving to the finish from a 4-rider breakaway. Michael Matthews (Team Sumweb) brought the bunch home for 2nd with our Ryan Gibbons placing 3rd.
It was another tough stage at the Volta Catalunya, although considered a stage for the sprinters, the race still climbed over 2000m today. A strong 4-rider break animated the racing but a couple of teams from the peloton organised the chase for their sprinters, including Team Dimension Data.
Jacques Janse van Rensburg put in a strong ride today at the head of the chasing peloton. Receiving assistance from Danilo Wyss and then Ben O’Connor, Gibbons was well placed for the finale. Unfortunately the sprint was only for 2nd place as Schachmann managed to stay away, but a strong World Tour podium nonetheless for our South African.
