Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck-Quickstep) won the final stage of the Volta ao Algarve, getting the better of Soren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb) on the final climb of Alto do Malhao.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had Steve Cummings finish in 5th place after a trademark late attack, with 20km to go, saw our British star form part of the stage deciding break.
Cummings, Stybar and Andersen forced out a minutes gap over reduced peloton, heading toward the final 3km climb of the race. Upon reaching the climb, “Stevo” was distanced early on but rode within himself to hang onto a decent 5th place result, as the GC contenders came charging up the climb from behind.
It was a positive result for African Team to end the week on after illness got the better of both Edvald Boasson Hagen & Julien Vermote earlier in the race. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) won the race overall after an impressive display of riding throughout the 5-stage race. Michael Valgren was our best placed on GC, taking 15th.
“We can be happy with how today ended after a difficult week for our team. Losing Edvald so early in the race limited our chances, and then Julien too. The guys pulled together well though, today we had Steve up the road and Ben & Michael were still in the group behind for the finale. It was great to see Steve doing what he does best again.” – Bingen Fernandez, Sport Director
