Leader in the King of the Mountains category at the Volta ao Algarve, Ben King, highlighted his good early season form by finishing top of our team’s challenge in the Individual Time Trial in Lagoa.
He finished 30th quickest overall; 1 minute 33 seconds behind stage winner Geraint Thomas (Sky) who completed the 20.3km circuit in 24:09.
Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Soudal) was second with Stefan Kung (BMC) in third.
Edvald Boasson Hagen continues to make his return to fitness after a setback earlier in the year and placed 35th, 10s behind his American teammate.
That result sees Thomas retain his lead in the general classification with Louis Meintjes, 50th in the time trial, in 18th position overall.
King will wear his King of the Mountains jersey into the 199.2km stage 4 from Almodôvar to Tavira focused on retaining it all the way until the race’s conclusion on Sunday.
Ben King – Rider
“It was the first time trial of the year for me so I wanted to get a feel for the bike. It was also good to keep the legs moving for the upcoming days, as I’m sure I’ll have to fight in order to keep the jersey. Today I kept it by default but was pleased with my ride nonetheless”
