Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the opening stage of the Tour of Turkey. The Irishman sprinted to the win ahead of Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal).
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka showed some positive signs on the first sprint stage of the Tour of Turkey. The build up to the sprint saw Ben O’Connor, Scott Davies and neo-pro, Stefan de Bod, doing some good turns at the front of our leadout for Mark Cavendish.
Unfortunately, the rustiness of not having performed a leadout for some time showed in the final 2km, as Ryan Gibbons, Mark Renshaw and Cavendish lost each other in the fight for position.
Being too far back when the sprint opened, there was no chance of coming back into contention for our fast men, as Cavendish crossed the line 21st.
Tomorrow provides another opportunity for a bunch kick, although the slight uphill finish will certainly change the dynamics of the sprint and the rider types will be in contention.
