Tour of Poland #3: Strong showing just short

Monday’s third stage of the Tour de Pologne played out exactly as expected, and saw a bunch sprint settle matters after 139km of racing in Zabrze.

Alvaro Hodeg (Quickstep-Floors) took the line honours ahead of Daniel McLay (EF-Education) and Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal). Edvald Boasson Hagen finished fastest for us, in 15th place.

An early breakaway of four riders stayed away for most of the day but were kept under the watchful eye of the peloton, the lead at one point stretched out to around 4 minutes.

That was caught inside the final 10km with the likes of Bora-hansgrohe, who went into the stage with the yellow jersey on the shoulders of Pascal Ackermann, and Mitchelton-Scott doing strong work on the front of the bunch, along with ourselves.

Positioning into the final few corners of a high-paced finish proved decisive with Hodeg rounding off matters emphatically and in the process also claiming the yellow jersey.

We had to reset after the first 2 stages to give Edvald some more support into the final (section of the race). The entire team showed great commitment and were all up there today.

In the final two corners however, we were pushed into the wrong areas and were without possibilities to get out of the difficulty, unfortunately.
