Tour of Poland #2: Youcef Reguigui races to 5th place

The 2nd stage of the Tour of Poland came down to a mass sprint and it was Sacha Modolo (UAE Emirates) who came out on top. Danny van Poppel (Team Sky) took 2nd and Max Walscheid (Sunweb) finished in 3rd.

It was another day for the fast men at the Tour of Poland with the main break of the day being caught with 40km to go. A few riders tried to upset the rhythm of the pure sprinters with some late attacking, including Nathan Haas who went away with 7km to go. Bora-Hansgrohe and Orica-Scott shut everything down though and a sprint finale would determine the stage victor.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka looked to Youcef Reguigui for today’s finish and he had the support of Tyler Farrar and Nathan Haas in the closing kilometers. Under the 1km to go kite and Reguigui moved onto the wheel of Modolo, poised to kick for the line in Katowice. As Modolo made his move our Algerian champion followed and looked ready to slingshot into the lead with 150m to go. Unfortunately, just as Reguigui saw his gap to the right of Modolo, a slow-moving Trek-Segafredo rider came in to close the door on our Algerian champion.

As Modolo pulled away, Reguigui had to restart his sprint but the lost momentum and short distance to the line put an end to our African Team hopes of a stage win today. Reguigui crossed the line in 5th while Haas held his speed after positioning Reguigui to cross the line in 10th position.

Youcef Reguigui – Rider
I was feeling really good in the final today and had a good position leading into the sprint. I wanted to kick past Modolo but the space that was there a second before was closed by another rider. I had to sit down and hit the brakes to not crash. I tried to go again but the momentum was gone. It is disappointing to come so close without even having the chance to sprint, the positive is the legs are quite good and I was able to be in a race winning position.
