The cycling world will have it’s eyes fixed on the Tour de France this July, but once again, the scenic and testing Tour of Austria will again run in parallel to the sports biggest event. The UCI 2.1 event gets underway on Saturday 6 July, ending Friday 12 July.
The Tour of Austria has been a happy hunting ground for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders in year’s gone by, with both Ben O’Connor and Tom-Jelte Slagter counted as former stage winners at the event.
This year, both O’Connor and Slagter will line up for the 7 day race, which includes an opening prologue and 6 road stages. There are a couple of flat stages after the prologue for the sprinters, but the majority of the race lends itself to climbers and opportunists with 2 summit finishes included.
We have an exciting team ready to duke it out over the mountains in Austria, contesting for stage wins and a good overall GC placing.
“Having just completed the Criterium du Dauphine recently, I am really looking forward to the Tour of Austria. In general we have a nice young team with 2 experienced pro’s in Gaspa (Enrico Gasparotto) and TJ (Tom-Jelte Slagter). We’ll certainly look to their guidance during the week, to learn from them and have them guide us through what is hopefully a successful week. My preparation has been good up until now, so I hope it will show during the race.” – Stefan de Bod
