Pieter Weening (Roompot) rode to victory on stage 5 of the Tour of Austria. Alexander Foliforov (Gazprom) was 2nd and Simone Sterbini (Bardiani-CSF) finished in 3rd.
The 5th stage of the Tour of Austria was a short 93km affair but included 2 big climbs, with the final climb taking the riders above 2400m in altitude to finish at Grosglockner. To test the riders further, they also had to deal with some light rain throughout the stage and cooler temperatures.
An early break went clear at the foot of the first climb but our African Team had hinged its bets on the final climb. In the end, it was the climb up Grosglockner that made the difference. Weening, pushing his familar big gear, powered up the difficult climb, passing all the early breakaway riders to take an impressive stage win.
Our African Team had both Lachlan Morton and Louis Meintjes riding well in the GC group before the race truly exploded around 4km from the summit finish. Morton went on to be our best finisher on the day, placing 13th on the stage.
