Matej Mohoric (Bharain-Merida) won the opening stage of the Tour of Austria with a late solo attack. Giovanni Visconti made it a 1-2 for the Bahrain squad and Floris Gerts (Roompot) rounded out the stage podium.
A 150km stage got the Tour of Austria underway today with a mostly flat route to start with, before a few undulations kept the finale interesting. The early break of the day was caught with around 25km to go and this brought our African Team into the action as we appeared at the head of the race.
Johann van Zyl and Ben King were really attentive over the undulations, flowing a flurry of attacks in the final 20km. Nothing seemed to stick until in a technical final 3km, when Mohoric took advantage of the fast and tight run-in to Feldkirch, distancing himself from the peloton.
Mohoric arrived at the line with seconds to spare as the rest of the main filed desperately tried to limit it’s loss, with a few small splits occurring on the line. Louis Meintjes was our best placed on the day, and did well to finish just 11 seconds down on the Slovenia National Champion.
