Tour Down Under #5: Gibbons moves into 4th & young rider jersey

The 5th stage of the Tour Down Under ended with a mass sprint in Strathalbyn. It was Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) who crossed the line first, but he was later disqualified for a headbutting Jasper Philipsen (UAE-Emirates) in the finale, handing the victory to the Belgian.

For us, it was again about Ryan Gibbons giving the mass sprint a go. Our South African would secure 8th place, which was enough to see him move up to 4th place on GC and also pull on the young riders jersey heading into tomorrow’s final stage.

“Once again, not totally happy with the stage result. I was definitely hoping for more than 8th in the sprint but in that final kilometer I found myself too far back, with not much opportunity to move up. The young riders jersey is a great consolation though. It’s pretty surreal actually, if someone said i’d be in 4th place overall and in the white jersey heading to Willunga a few days ago, you would’ve said they are crazy. Now that we have the jersey, the challenge is to fight to keep it and place high on the overall, and secure some World Tour points.” – Ryan Gibbons
