The opening stage of the Santos Tour Down Under ended in a mass sprint and it was Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick Step) who took the stage honours.
Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had much to smile about as our South African sprinter, Ryan Gibbons, got up for a fine fifth place finish.
For Gibbons and Team Dimension Data it was just the positive start to the season we were looking for. With another sprint stage tomorrow, the South African sprinter will have his eye on a placing slightly higher up on the finish sheet before our GC contenders, Tom-Jelte Slagter, Michael Valgren and Ben O’Connor take center stage for stage 3 & 4.
“It was a hot day out in Adelaide for today’s first stage of the Tour Down Under. It turned out to be a good day for us as I was able to mix it up in the sprint. Fifth today gives me confidence and I’ll be looking for a little more in the next sprint stages. I must say the team was great today, looking after me all stage. Closer to the final it was great to have the experience of Lars Bak guiding me into position for the sprint.” – Ryan Gibbons
