Tour de Yorkshire #4: Pauwels secures podium place

Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis) won stage four at the Tour de Yorshire, with Greg van Avermaet (BMC) winning the general classification. Eduard Prades (Euskadi-Murias) finished second overall, with Team Dimension Data’s Serge Pauwels rounding off the podium.

The last stage at the Tour de Yorkshire ran from Halifax to Leeds. With a parcours stage ahead, it was going to be a key stage in deciding the GC. The stage winner, Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis) was the break of the day and held his nerve to solo to victory.

In a pulsating battle for the podium places Greg van Avermaet (BMC) finished second, and thus ensured that he took the general classification win. Eduard Prades (Euskadi-Murias), sitting third in the GC before the stage, finished 5th and thus moved into second overall. Serge Pauwels, for our Africa team, moved up to third in GC after finishing 8th in the stage, thanks to some hard work by our team to keep him in contention.

Serge Pauwels – Rider

It was a very hard stage today, which was expected, with a lot of climbing. The race exploded pretty early and we had Scott in the breakaway, which was really good and we had him in front all day. In the last 50km we really took it on as a team and had Nic and Jay pulling to try and get the breakaway back. Then I had Julien leading me into the second last climb of the day with 25km to go. I played my cards there where we got rid of the leader in the GC. That move saw me podium in the GC which was probably the best that I could have hoped for with BMC and Greg Van Avermaet being so strong.

I’m really happy with the result.

This is a five star race just because of the crowds here, it’s incredible. It is Tour de France level or even bigger sometimes. You never get to see such big crowds on bike races and they’re super enthusiastic and that’s why I love to always come back here.
