The Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders put in a huge performance on stage two of Tour de Yorkshire. Kristian Sbaragli finished sixth in the bunch sprint after the team had attacked tirelessly on the final 20 kilometers.
Since Saturday’s stage was the last chance for the sprinters to shine in the race, it was no surprise that the peloton only allowed a group of just four riders to get away early on. The breakaway never posed any real danger for the pack, which kept the front riders on a tight leash all day long.
However, the teams of the top favorites for the stage win didn’t make life easy for themselves as they already caught the break with over 20 km left to go. This opened up the door for several counter attacks. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was very active with multiple riders going up the road. The team continued to push on but at the end, it all came back together for the expected bunch sprint. In a chaotic finish, Sbaragli managed to repeat yesterday’s performance to take 6th place as Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) won the stage.
Tomorrow, Tour de Yorkshire concludes with a difficult and very undulating stage from Bradford to Fox Valley in Sheffield. No less than four short and steep hills await the riders on the final 20 km of the stage. Our African team is ready to fight all the way to the end.
“The team did very well today. Unfortunately, I found myself in a wrong position in the final, so I had to start my sprint too far from the finishing line. I’m not really happy with my result today as this was a good chance for me. However, the team was great. Tomorrow is a very hard day but we have some good climbers here and I will do my best to help the guys get a good overall result”.
