Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was once gain in the mix on stage 3 of Tour de Romandie. The team helped control the early breakaway and at the end, Youcef Reguigui paid back his teammates when he finished 6th in the bunch sprint.
Early in the stage, a strong group of seven riders got away. However, the peloton never let the break get too much of a gap after narrowly missing out yesterday. Bahrain-Merida worked hard at the front of the pack to make sure the gap never exceeded three minutes. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka helped out with Jay Thomson and with 35 km left to go, the seven riders were back in the peloton again.
A few riders tried their luck on the last kilometers but ultimately, it all ended with the expected bunch sprint. Jaco Venter did a great job to put Reguigui in a good position and the fast Algerian did not disappoint as he gave the team its second Top10 place in three days. Elia Viviani (Team Sky) took the win, while Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo) kept the leader’s jersey.
Tomorrow awaits the queen stage of Tour de Romandie with an uphill finish in Leysin. The last 4 km have an average gradient of 7.2 % with parts of 12 % towards the top. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka brings several strong climbers to the race. Both Natnael Berhane and Merhawi Kudus have shown great shape lately and now, the two Eritreans aim to shine in the mountains.
Alex Sans Vega – sports director:
“As we approached the finish, we focused 100 % on Youcef [Reguigui]. We don’t have a team here to do a leadout so we had Jaco [Venter] deliver Youcef in the best possible position on the final kilometers. It worked out very well. Tomorrow’s stage is super hard. It’s one for the big GC favorites. We hope that our Eritrean climbers will put on a great show. The weather forecast looks good so hopefully, they can deliver a strong performance”.
