Tirreno-Adriatico #4: Kreuziger climbs up the general classification

Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) won stage 4 of Tirreno-Adriatico, taking a small group sprint ahead of Primoz Roglic (Astana) and Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott).

It was a long day of 221km with the back-end of the stage packed with numerous short steep climbs. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had the goal of protecting the interests of Roman Kreuziger, and it was a job they did well.

Arriving to the final circuit in Fossombrone, Lutsenko was leading solo from a select group that still contained Tom-Jelte Slagter and Kreuziger. The climb on the final circuit named Cappuccini, was short but incredibly steep and created an even smaller selection.

Roglic, Yates and Jakob Fuglsang jumped across to Lutsenko who had been slowed by a crash with 1.5km to go, but the Kazakh champion still had enough fight in him to win the sprint for the stage. Kreuziger finished with the select group, placing 14th on the stage and again climbed up the general classification to now sit in 19th.
