Tirreno-Adriatico #1: BMC fastest in race against the clock

BMC Racing Team were the winners of the first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, thus ensuring that Damiano Caruso will start tomorrow’s stage in the leader’s jersey. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka finished in 18th overall.

Tirreno-Adriatico got underway with a race against the clock, a 21,5km team time trial in Lido di Camaiore. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka were 6th out of the starting block and navigated the fast, flat course in a time of 23’35”.

Team Dimension Data were 1’06” off the winning time, which gave us an overall standing of 18th. Mark Cavendish crashed while our African team were on course. Our Manxman completed the stage and after being treated by our medical team was taken to a local hospital for further assessment.

BMC Racing Team put in a strong performance and set a winning time of 22’19”, defending their team time trial efforts from 2017. Mitchelton – Scott came second, just 4 seconds off the pace and Team Sky rounded off the top three.

“We went out pretty well and it was going good and then on the way home Cav (Cavendish) crashed and that was really bad. I hope that he’s okay after a check but I felt quite good today.”
