Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo Visma) won stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana, taking victory on the steep ramp up to Valdepenas de Jaen. The Movistar duo of Enric Mas and Miguel Angel Lopez finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
Stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana was just a short and sharp 133km stage through the olive fields of Andalucia. A tough finale, that included a category 2 climb before a sharp punchy finish, made it day for the GC men and puncheur specialists.
A 5-rider breakaway did animate the early part of the stage and Magnus Cort Nielsen, already a stage winner at this years addition of the race, nearly pulled off a repeat victory. The Danish rider was only caught in the final 500m, on the steep ramp to the line as the GC contenders sprinted for the line.
Roglic took a commanding victory while Team Qhubeka NextHash best placed rider was Sergio Henao, taking 12th place on the stage. Unfortunately Fabio Aru fell out of GC contention today after he lost over 11-minutes to Roglic. The Italian had been battling with stomach problems since the weekend, which finally caught up with him today.
Really difficult day for me at la vuelta today, due to some stomach issues I have had over the last few stages. I was able to save the situation a yesterday but today it was not possible. Obviously it is disappointing to be out of the overall picture but the positive news is the legs have been feeling very good and there is still a long way to go in the race and will not give up. Just some recovery is needed and then we look forward to the new opportunities that present itself now and go for stages.Fabio Aru
