Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the Prudential RideLondon Surrey Classic, sprinting to the win ahead of Elia Viviani (Quickstep-Floors) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segfredo)
It was a rain soaked edition of the Prudential RideLondon Surrey Classic this year but one our African Team was up for with Mark Cavendish ready to give the expected bunch sprint a go. When a 6-rider early break went clear, our African Team took control of the peloton with Johann van Zyl doing a large majority of the early pace setting.
Later in the race, after 6 more riders bridged to the lead group, Jaco Venter and Scott Davies went to the front of the peloton, adding reinforcement to the chase effort. While the Surrey Hills provided a stern challenge, the wet conditions made the race that much tougher with a few crashes late in the race disrupting the rhythm of the peloton.
The break was caught with just 7km to go, thanks to the strong work by Van Zyl, Venter and Davies. For the sprint finale though, Cavendish was left to fend for himself and never quite found a way through in the sprint. In the end, our Manxman could only follow the wheels home for 12th place.
