Lloyd Mondory (AG2R La Mondiale) won the 4th stage of the Vuelta a Burgos after out-sprinting Vicente Reyens (IAM Cycling) and team mate, Sebastian Turgot.
Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung had Youcef Reguigui right in the thick of the mass sprint, the Algerian would eventually finish in 7th position.
It was not your typical bunch sprint stage though. Having to contest 3 categorised climbs during the day and with an Astana team setting a really high pace, there was roughly only half the peloton left at the front of the race for the final 20km’s. Going over that final climb with 20km’s to go, Alexander Kolobnev (Katusha) and Biel Kadri (AG2R La Mondiale) put in a strong attack and quickly gained 20″ seconds.
The downhill run to the line and the lack of numbers by most teams meant it was going to be touch an go as to whether the 2 riders would be reeled in. Enter Team MTN-Qhubeka rider Linus Gerdemann. With Reguigui having made the front group, Team MTN-Qhubeka were intent on setting the stage up for the Algerian. Gerdemann almost single handily brought back the 2 escaping World Tour riders. With some assistance from Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka), Gerdemann was able to swing off with 3km to go after the race was all back together.

We knew that the last climb of the day was technical, with narrow roads and the last part pretty steep (14%). The goal was to put Sergio in a good position before the climb for the GC and Youcef for an eventual sprint finish. The guys did some excellent work and we had 4 riders in the first group after the last climb, Youcef climbed so well. At this point we saw that some top sprinters were dropped and Linus started to pull very hard to lead this group to the finish and give a chance to Youcef. Daniel also contributed to this work but it was not easy for us to leadout Youcef in the last km. We know the final result it is not the best but I am very happy to see how the team is racing here in Burgos. I am sure tomorrow Sergio and Daniel will do a great TT.
