Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will start the UCI 1.1 Rund um Köln later today. The 205km German one day race is being held for the 100th time this year and so our African Team is delighted to be represented at this prestigious event.
The Rund um Köln is a typical classic type race which certainly leans more toward the sprinters than the climbers due to the circuit finish in Köln. There is a fair amount of climbing over the first 170km of the race though, so any sprinter hoping to be in contention will have to first get through the through countryside terrain around Köln.
With both the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour de Suisse on the go, and a few injuries currently plaguing our African Team, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will only have 5 riders starting in Köln. Despite our lack in numbers, the goal remains to finish on the podium. Kristian Sbaragli will lead our team. Finishing 4th at the recent GP du canton d’Argovie, he showed that he has the form to challenge for the victory.
Mark Renshaw, Bernhard Eisel, Jaco Venter and Nic Dougall will compliment our teams goals well with Renshaw, Eisel and Venter also all capable of taking their own chance in a race like the Rund um Köln. Dougall will make his return in Köln after an Achilles injury has kept him off the bike since the Tour de Yorkshire.
Kristian Sbaragli – Rider
This will be the first time I race Köln but for our team, I think this can be a very good race. At the moment my condition is pretty good so I hope that I will be able to get a good result on Sunday.
