Preview: Gree Tour of Guangxi

The Gree Tour of Guangxi will bring our 2017 cycling season to an end, with the inaugural Chinese World Tour event set to get underway on Thursday 19 October and ending after 6 stages on 24 October.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will send a well-rounded team to the final race of the year, the Tour of Guangxi. The Chinese World Tour race will take shape over 6 road stages with the opening 3 stages suited to the sprinters, the final 3 stages are more undulating and should provide options to the punchy classics type riders. Stage 4 is the only stage with an uphill finish but the short sharp nature of the climb could keep some of the sprinters interested.

Our African Team will be led by Ryan Gibbons, our young South African sprinter who was on fine form the last time we raced in Asia, winning a stage and the overall at the Tour de Langkawi earlier this year. Joining Gibbons will be another of our stage winners from Langkawi this year, Mekseb Debesay. Debesay and Lachlan Morton will be key riders for the 4th stage and then throughout the week, Bernie Eisel, Jay Thomson, Daniel Teklehaimanot and Nic Dougall will be the firepower behind our protected riders.

As a World Tour event, a quality field is sure to be at the start with a number of key sprinters already confirmed to race. Securing a stage win will be our African Team’s first priority but a top placing on GC is not out of the question for either Debesay, Morton or Gibbons.

Ryan Gibbons – Rider
I am really looking forward to racing the Tour of Guangxi. It will be my first-time racing in China and I have some fond memories of racing in Asia, so I hope to repeat some of those past performances. The team we have for Guangxi is strong and motivated, despite it being so late in the season. I am confident that we will be able to pull something off at the race.
