Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and the rest of the riders in Paris-Nice were in for a very tough day in the saddle this Sunday.
Rain and strong winds welcomed the peloton to the opening stage of the French World Tour race. At first, everything seemed to be business as usual as a group of four riders managed to get away and establish a six minutes gap on the peloton. However, as the riders entered more exposed terrain, the severe crosswinds completely blew the peloton apart. Suddenly, only a very select group of riders was left in front.
A handful of the pre-stage favorites had made the cut to be part of the leading group and with help from their teammates, they managed to deny the chasers to bridge the gap. At the end, a group of only 20 riders ended up fighting for victory. Arnaud Démare (FDJ) took the win, and the first yellow jersey, while the majority of the Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders crossed the line within the main peloton.
Tomorrow awaits a 195 km long flat stage to Amilly. On paper, this should be a day for the sprinters. Our riders are eager to bounce back and fight for a good result.
