National Championships: Steve Cummings does the British Nationals double

The National Championships weekend came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday evening with Steve Cummings winning the British National Road Title, after he also won the Time Trial Title on Thursday evening. It was a successful championship weekend for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka as our African Team picked up 5 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Cummings was no doubt the man of the weekend after not racing since 4 April, where a crash at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco saw Cummings fracture his sternum, clavicle and scapula. Our British Champion showed he was back to his best with two incredible rides this weekend. Cummings stopped the clock 8 seconds faster than defending champion, Alex Dowsett (Movistar) during Thursday’s time trial. During this evening’s road race, Cummings soloed to victory after attacking the lead group of 4 riders with 7km to go.

Our 3 other gold medals all came from the time trial discipline where Adrien Niyonshuti won in Rwanda, Edvald Boasson Hagen won in Norway and Mekseb Debesay in Eritrea. Natnael Bernhane and Daniel Teklehaimanot took silver and bronze respectively at the Eritrean time trial to make it a clean sweep of the TT podium for our African Team while Merhawi Kudus secured bronze in the road race.

The successful weekend of racing sets our African Team up nicely with the Tour de France Grand Depart the next appointment on our race calendar.

Steve Cummings – Rider
It was a really tough race, but that style of competition is what you miss when you haven’t been racing. It was punchy and explosive and there were so many efforts. I’m back now so we can forget about the injuries. It’s nice to be back doing what I do and looking forward to whatever is next. It’ll be nice to be at the Tour and to get stuck in.
