With the classics specialists in full flight over in Northern Europe, the UCI World Tour stage race contenders will head to the Itzulia Basque Country today.
Today, the 6 stage Itzulia Basque Country will get underway with an opening individual time trial stage, before finishing next Saturday in Eibar.
It is well known that the Basque Country Tour is probably the “hardest” week-long stage race of the season, with every stage littered with sharp climbs. Even the opening 12km ITT includes a category 3 climb.
Who to watch
Steve Cummings – If there was a man made for the tough Basque Country roads, Stevo is one of them. Having experienced success at the race previously, our British star will relish the expected attacking racing which often rewards those in the breakaway.
Nic Dlamini – Making his first European race start of the season, after dealing with visa issues, Dlamini will be looking to get off to a flying start at Basque Country. While it might take Dlamini the week to find his race legs, his punchy riding style will be an asset to our overall team goals.
He said what
Itzulia Basque Country is a difficult race over challenging terrain. The peloton is really flying at the moment too, so only those guys with top condition can expect to feature in this race. We have some guys well suited to the stages this year, so if we can race with positive intent & have good legs, then a top result is defiantly possible. – Bingen Fernandez, Sport Director
