Jonas Vingegaard (Team Jumbo-Visma) won stage 5 of the UAE Tour ahead of race leader Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), with Adam Yates (INEOS Grenadiers) placing 3rd.
Stage 5 of the UAE Tour was the last chance for the climbers at this year’s race, as the 170km stage ended at the top of the UAE’s highest point, Jebel Jais.
Team Qhubeka ASSOS were looking to Domenico Pozzovivo for a top stage placing today while the rest of the team would follow any moves at the beggining of the stage, just in case a strong break was allowed clear.
Giacomo Nizzolo was in a few of the early attacks, and eventually went clear with one other rider. The hope was that a few more riders would come across to them, but that was not to be, as they peloton started to let the gap go with just the two riders in the break.
Not wanting to burn too many matches ahead of the final two upcoming sprint stages, with only one other rider to share the workload, Nizzolo returned to the peloton. A new break of 9 riders then countered and we had Lasse Norman Hansen in the move.
The peloton allowed the group to ride away by just over 3 minutes before INEOS began controlling the gap from behind. Hansen rode strongly all the way to the foot of the final 18km climb. He then hung on as long as he could but as the climbers accelerated on the uphill gradient, the breakaway riders were reeled in one-by-one.
Pozzovivo was not on his best of day’s but our Italian climber stayed with the favourites right up until the final 1.5 kilometers when the attacks for the stage win came. Vingegaard’s early move would pay off, as he took the victory. Pozzovivo would lose 32 seconds on the line, placing 26th on the stage.
