The stage today was a battle between the general classification contenders, and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) crossed the summit finish line ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) and Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott).
Stage 15 was the third consecutive day on mountains and the stage included four categorised climbs, including the special category summit finish. Louis Meintjes, who crashed yesterday, was cleared by our medical team to start today’s stage.
The first hour of racing was fast and while plenty attacks came off the front, the peloton neutralised them. Eventually a break of 12 made it away and Ben King worked hard to be in the action for Team Dimension Data. King added to his tally of King of the Mountains points, bringing his total to 56 points. He now sits 3rd in the overall King of the Mountains standings.
The break was caught on the ascent of the final climb, Lagos de Covadonga, and the group of GC favourites went on the contest the stage. Pinot attacked in the final stretch, thus ensuring he was first to the summit.
Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier was our highest placed rider, finishing the day in 26th place. Ben King moved up to 25th place in the GC for Team Dimension Data.
