Juan Sebastien Molano (UAE Team Emirates) sprinted to victory on stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos, taking the win ahead of Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates).
Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos saw riders take on an undulating 175km from Tardajos to Briviesca. 5 riders got away in an early break and managed to build up a 6-minute lead, before team UAE and Bora-Hansgrohe took up the chase.
With the two World Tour teams controlling the gap, it soon became apparent that the stage would be decided in a bunch sprint. Team Qhubeka NextHash had Reinardt Janse van Rensburg ready and motivated for the final bunch kick,
Unfortunately, on the way toward Brivesca, Janse van Rensburg’s teammate, Emil Vinjebo was involved in crash that resulted in the Dane abandoning the race. Scans later revealed that Vinjebo had suffered a broken left collarbone. Sad news for Vinjebo and Team Qhubeka NextHash as the 27-year-old was hopeful of a grand tour debut, at the upcoming Vuelta a Espana.
Nevertheless, the race had to continue and Janse van Rensburg was right in the mix as the peloton charged into the final kilometers. Team UAE Emirates had the strongest leadout, which saw Molano take a good win while Janse van Rensburg showed impressive speed to finish in 6th place on the stage.
