Injury update on Steve Cummings

On Thursday, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka’s team leader in Vuelta al Pais Vasco, Steve Cummings, suffered a bad crash on stage 4, which caused him to abandon the Spanish World Tour race.

At the hospital, x-ray exams confirmed fractures on Cummings’ left collarbone and scapula as well as a sternum fracture. The 36-year-old Brit was set to lead the team in the Ardennes monument, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, later this month but he will now have to change his race schedule and re-focus on other goals.

Dr Jarrad Van Zuydam – Team Doctor
“The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction. He will stay in hospital overnight to allow adequate pain management but we hope to transfer him by tomorrow and schedule the surgery in the next two days. If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks’ time with a gradual return as pain allows”.
