Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quickstep) won the Coppa Bernocchi today in Legnano, Italy. Alessandro Covi (UAE Emirates) was 2nd and Fausto Masnada (Deceuninck-Quickstep) finished 3rd.
Team Qhubeka NextHash took on today’s Coppa Bernocchi with a strong team, that also included the 2016 winner of the race, Giacomo Nizzolo. Torrential rain in and around Legnano made it a different race to that of previous years though, which suited the sprinters somewhat.
After a fast start, a high-quality 6 rider breakaway went clear. Evenepoel was joined by his teammate, Masnada together with Thibaut Pinot, Alessandro Covi, Samuele Battistella and Antonio Puppio from our Qhubeka Continental team.
Puppio was part of our World Tour team today, brought up from our u23 development team, in accordance with the UCI regulations which allow for and promote athlete development between a pro team and its official development team.
The 6-man group worked well during the 6 laps of a hilly circuit to build a lead of over 4 minutes, before heading back toward Legnano for the finish. It was on the way back into town where Evenepoel attacked his breakaway companions and went solo to the finish.
The chasers had no answer to the Belgian prodigy as he continually increased his gap. The peloton had all but shut off, as there gap to the Puppio group also increased.
In the end, Evenepoel took a fine win on the rain soaked roads of Legnano. After a few late attacks among the chasers, Puppio would roll across the line 6th, a fantastic result up against the full time World Tour pro’s and even more impressive given the fact he was 9th at the u23 Piccolo Lombardia just yesterday.
