Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, ahead of Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Greg Van Avermaet (Team CCC), with Tom Jelte Slagter claiming 6th place for us.
The early breakaway of six riders enjoyed the majority of the day in front, but were swept up with two laps of the 12,6km circuit to go. Following that, there were plenty of attacks off the front. However, all the attacks were neutralised, and with 1km to go, the reduced bunch sprinted to the line, with Matthews taking the win. Tom Jelte Slagter crossed the line in 6th place for us. Michael Valgren took a respectable 19th position.
“I always enjoy racing here in Québéc and Montreal, and these races obviously suit me very well. I’m happy I could achieve another top 10 result today as I did in my last races. It’s feels good to payback my teammates because they helped me very well during the day, as it also feels good to show the people that don’t have confidence in me. Let’s see if we can repeat today’s performance on Sunday again.” Tom Jelte Slagter
