GP Beghelli: Late attack takes the sprinters by surprise

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka did well to put its mark on the final of the Italian one-day race, GP Beghelli this Sunday afternoon. Ultimately, a lone attacker managed to keep the sprinters at bay.

A small group of four riders managed to distance the peloton early in the race. The pack seemed content with the situation and didn’t mind giving the breakaway a gap of seven minutes before it started chasing. With just over 60 km left to go, the peloton caught the quartet and the counterattacks immediately began.

The Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders were very attentive near the front, constantly joining the moves. Nic Dougall was part of a strong group, which got a gap of about 30 seconds on the pack towards the end. Unfortunately, the break got caught on the final climb of the day with less than 10 km to go. Soon after, Luis León Sanchez (Astana) attacked at the front and that proved to be the winning strike. Despite a furious chase, the pack didn’t manage to reel back in Sanchez who soloed to victory.
