Stage five was offered plenty of excitement, with the breakaway managing to edge out the general classification favourites.
Filippo Ganna (INS) soloed to a superb win from the breakaway.
Domenico Pozzovivo, protected through the stage by various teammates, was one of the first from the Maglia Rosa group to start the descent of Valico de Montescuro, a climb he is very familiar with. He crossed the line in 13th place today, which sees him move up to 6th place on the general classification.
With the fog and wet road, it was a bit dangerous, but I could manage it because I know the roads very well. Sometimes I train here when I am in the south of Italy because my wife is from this region. I think I was less scared than usual with the rain. When Nibali attacked in the descent I could follow him because I knew every corner. I am feeling good. Today I think the final climb was not that steep to make a difference (in the GC), we went really fast in the last 9 kms. It was impossible to attack, I tried just to get into a good position on the top to have the best position to start the down.
