The Giro d’Italia got underway today with a short and fast individual time trial in Monreale. Newly crowned World Champion Filippo Ganna (INS) set a winning time of 15’24”.
Matteo Sobreo, making his grand tour debut on home soil, put in an outstanding effort to finish seventh overall for us, with a time of 16’04”.
Victor Campenaerts, unfortunately, crashed during his time trial, which saw his chances of contending for the maglia rosa ended, as he crossed the line
01:07 behind the winner.
Despite the tricky course and difficult conditions, the rest of our team all completed the opening stage of the race safely.
“I was a bit lucky because the wind was not as fast as it was earlier on in the day. The Giro has started, let’s see how it goes in the next few days. Today was not a usual time trial, the wind and the weather were not normal. You can be lucky, or you can be unlucky like Victor, so I am happy with my performance.”
