Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) won the stage 9 individual time trial of the Giro d’Italia. Victor Campanearts (Lotto-Soudal) placed 2nd with Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) in 3rd.
Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia was a tough 34.8km test against the clock with the final 12km all heading uphill. For Team Dimension Data, today was all about Ben O’Connor putting together a solid performance to aid his GC ambitions.
While O’Connor had a later afternoon start, Scott Davies was a bit of a surprise package for us early on, as the Welshman took advantage of the dry conditions and posted a respectable time of 54’29” to briefly occupy the hot seat.
As the rain came down in Rimini, some of the favorites began to start their efforts. O’Connor got progressively faster during his race and went on to stop the clock with the 5th best time at the line of 54’15”. By the time the final rider came in, both O’Connor and Davies held onto top 20 spots by placing 17th & 19th respectively.
“Today I’m really pleased how it turned out. It literally began raining as I was on the start line, however my pacing stayed the same, being able to ramp up on the climb up to San Marino being a great sign. It’s a great confidence boost after the disappointing luck of losing time in big crashes. Time to claw that time back now day by day!” – Ben O’Connor
