Pello Bilbao (Astana) won stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia, being the strongest from a 13 rider breakaway. 2nd went to Tony Gallopin (AG2R La Mondiale) and Davide Formolo (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished 3rd.
Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia was fast and furious, with the peloton averaging near on 50km/h for the first 2 hours of racing. Eventually, 13 riders managed to make the break of the day with all our Team Dimension Data riders part of the main group.
Team UAE-Emirates was keen to keep the gap under control in order to protect their pink leaders jersey. This ensured the pace remained high for the entire 185km route but the break would still steal the stage glory.
Team Dimension Data had some late drama when Ben O’Connor punctured with just 13km to go. Fortunately, after a quick bike change, O’Connor had Ryan Gibbons and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier on hand to pace him back to the main group and then went on to finish with the main GC favourites.
