Richard Carapaz (Movistar) won a crash marred stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia. Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) placed 2nd and Diego Ulissi (UAE-Emirates) was 3rd.
It was a long stage at the Giro d’Italia today, measuring just over 235km. If the constantly undulating nature of the parcour wasn’t enough of a test, then the technical nature of the final 15km would sure be.
Initially. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka were looking to Ryan Gibbons and Enrico Gasparotto for the finale but unfortunately, neither were able to stretch their legs and go for a result as our entire team was caught behind a mass crash with 6.5km to go.
While it was disappointing to be out of stage contention as a result of the crash, the biggest blow was actually to our GC contender, Ben O’Connor. With only 15-odd riders getting through the crash, O’Connor had to chase all the way to the line but would eventually have to concede 1’30” to the front group.
O’Connor dropped 12 spots on GC, now sitting 36th and 2’59” down on Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma)
