Pascal Ackerman (Bora-Hansgrohe) sprinted to the stage 2 victory at the Giro d’Italia today. Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quickstep) finished 2nd and Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) was 3rd.
After a wet start in Bologna, the 200km stage to Fuccechio saw the clouds lift for an exciting and dry sprint finale. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had its hopes pinned on Giacomo Nizzolo for the final dash but unfortunately, disaster struck at 10km to go when Nizzolo punctured.
It was a real pity as the team had shaped up well for the finale with Enrico Gasparotto in particular, looking really strong in the closing 5km. Ryan Gibbons took on the finishing role for us in the end, but with some slight illness still holding our South African back, he had to be content with 11th place today.
The rest of our Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka also reached the finish in Fuccechio without much trouble and Ben O’Connor even saw himself gain 7 spots on GC, to now place 31st overall.
